When laser light is emitted through a double slit or a line grating, the typical diffraction pattern with minima and maxima appears on the screen (see figure).
If a cross grating consisting of two line gratings rotated by 90° is used instead of a line grating, a two-dimensional diffraction pattern is obtained on the screen.
If the experiment is extended by adding further cross gratings, each of which is placed in the slide holder at a slight angle to the previous ones, further interference maxima appear on the screen. It is noticeable that the first-order interference maxima are arranged in a circle around the center.
